Description
The old water tower in Mariupol, a symbol of the city, has over 100 years of history behind it. It was built in 1909 by architect Victor Alexandrovich Nielsen. In the beginning of its existence the tower was a part of the first city water supply and was later used as a tall observation tower above the fire brigade building. In the year 1983 it received its status as a monument of architecture. In 1996, a branch of a bank opened in the tower, and before that the idea of creating an urban planning museum was considered. However, the tower remains accessible to the public, and on its top floor there is a conference room with an observation platform. In the year 2012, the bank closed its branch in the tower. In 2018, the tower underwent a massive reconstruction and the water tower was transformed into a tourist information center called “Vezha.” By miracle, the tower survived. There is damage; there is no glass and the doors broken. But it has yet to be repaired and restored.
