Description
The house with a clock (Ukrainian: "Budynok z godinnik") - one of the buildings of Stalinist architecture built in the 1950s in the city of Mariupol, was notable for its clock tower. Located on Mira Avenue. The clock tower was located on the corner of the building, on its upper floors there was a studio of the artist Viktor Arnautov; after his death, for some time, several more artists working in the genre of monumental painting periodically worked in the workshop, but the attempt to create a museum based on the workshop failed. In addition to the workshop, the tower was notable for the fact that from the end of the 1930s to the end of the 1980s, there was not a single other clock tower or a functioning bell tower in Mariupol. The top of the tower was decorated with machicolations. The facade was divided into diverse balconies and pilasters, the roof was decorated with skylights. The first floor was visually separated from the upper floors by rustication. The appearance of the corner tower has changed several times. At times, it featured advertisements for the local company Azovstal, which consisted of letters and a logo in red on a blue background at the top of the tower and a globe on top of it. This installation was eliminated until 2019. At the same time, nondescript digital clocks were removed. In 2021, restoration began, during which it was planned to repair the facade of the building overlooking Metallurgists and Mir Avenues, the plan was to repair the roof and install an animatronic installation dedicated to the artist Arkhip Kuindzhi. By the end of 2021, the renovation of the facade was completed, a new three-meter clock was installed, equipped with its own bell. In 2022, the house was partially destroyed during the occupation of Mariupol by Russian troops and was demolished in early 2023.
